nana, grandma and grandpa were in town, so it seemed like a good idea to take in avila valley barn.  it felt very fall-ish–except for the 85 degree heat.  piles and piles of pumpkins, a hayride, ice cream and fresh pies made for a perfect afternoon.  well almost perfect.  sweaters and scarves would have made it perfect {and a little chill in the air}.  but then again, the ice cream tasted reeeeally good.

warm, cold, windy…what’s your idea of perfect fall weather?

david discovered slime this week.  he looooves it.  it’s gooey and messy and so fun.

his teacher made it with equal parts white glue and corn starch.

(pics taken with my phone)

guess who matthias is going to be for halloween?  or i should say, guess who matthias is going to be everyday from now until halloween?  and i love this family portrait drawn by matthias.  no need to have professional pictures taken for our christmas card this year, we’ll just use this drawing!

recap2

love these pics i re-discovered of the boys wrestling with daddy.  and that huge grin on david’s face.  is there anything better??

i love love love the way this chandelier is glowing in the evening light.  it makes me giddy.
brightening my day today…coffee-yuuuum, halloween cinnamon rolls (bright orange frosting at matthias’ request), wrapping up a big project-yay!, getting ready for visitors this weekend,  some quality snuggle time with my sweet boys.  i love thursday.  i’m anticipating the weekend right around the corner.

what’s illuminating your day?

gray.

October 14th | older posts

a little inspiration today, brought to you by way of the color gray.

*

gray1

*

the skies are gray and cloudy and stormy today.  it’s such a refreshing change.

*

gray2

*

i think blue heron should be called gray heron-or at least blue-gray heron.  i love these birds.  and this gray, weathered rock at the tide pools has so much texture and history.

*

gray3

*

i have been thrilled about the response to our new ornament.  hurry, they are on sale through thursday.

*

gray4

*

boots inspired by this post and found at kohl’s (40% off).  and gray knit toastys–a gift from this gal.  perfect.

*

gray5

*

tree trunks in faded brown-gray and garden statues worn and weathered over time.

*

gray6

*

and a soft, gray feather found at the beach.

*

sometimes gray is thought of as cold or dreary, but i’d like to stand behind gray and argue that it can be stable and warm and full of texture and light.  who will stand with me??

poor mr. pumpkin head.

mr-potato-head-revisited

this is what steve and i found yesterday (and had a good laugh).  mr. pumpkin head is still smiling on the outside, but i think he’s crying on the inside.  hmmm, WHO could be responsible for this???

marijke + tim (the wedding)

October 12th | weddings

remember this couple?  they got married on saturday. and it was lovely.

tm1
*

i wore a black dress with tights and black t-straps.  matthias asked me why i painted my legs green.

he has an awful lot of opinions about what i wear.

*

tm2

*

every couple got a jar of homemade plum jam.  and we parked just across the way near

a vineyard and took a shuttle to the ceremony/reception site.

*

tm3

*

they were married at a home in rural arroyo grande under a canopy of trees at sunset.  it was breath-taking.

*

tm4

*

marijke and a friend made her dress.  many of the touches from the wedding were homemade.

i love homemade gatherings–they have so much character.

*

tm5

*

after the sunset the candles and strings of lights just glowed.  i didn’t bring my flash, so my friend beth and i just tried to steady my camera as best we could in the low light.  she captured the kiss above.   the evening was so beautiful.  i soaked it all up!

tim & marijke, i wish you joy.  your life together won’t be easy, cushy or fluffy.  that’s not who you two are.

but it will be marked by beauty, kindness and love.  and that is a wonderful blessing.

finding a little piece of quiet.

quiet

I roll out of bed and step right into the shower. The boys seem to sense when I’m awake because they’re already in the bathroom asking for breakfast before my shower is done.

Get dressed, pour cereal, pack lunches, grab homework, climb into the car.

Then errands to run, bills to pay, emails to return, dishes to do, phone calls to make…

*

i’m over at (in)courage today.  please come over and read the rest of the post.  and happy monday!

this. that. and one more thing.

hope-necklace

first things first!  our new hope necklace {finally!} in honor of breast cancer awareness month.  1″x1/2″ sterling pendant is hand-stamped with the word hope and strung with a hand-crafted, sterling ribbon from sterling chain.  simple, beautiful and meaningful.  so many of us have friends or family who have been touched by cancer.  10% of the proceeds go to the national breast cancer foundation during the month of october!  you’ll find it here (and it’s on sale this weekend!!).

*

mr-pumpkin-head

second, mr. pumpkin head is my idea of pumpkin carving.  the boys loved it and it was mess free!  we’ll probably carve some pumpkins closer to halloween–but this definitely gets us in the spirit!

*

superhero3

and one more thing.  matthias’ latest superhero drawing.  name? super bat!  super powers? he can make tornados come out of his chest, through his hands and he throws them at bad guys and they break into tiny pieces (his words).  if i could pick a super power?  the ability to do mounds of laundry with the snap of my finger…or maybe the power to maintain a positive attitude and not get grumpy (especially during the 4:30 lull when i think, ‘how much longer until daddy gets home?!’.

*

what super power would you choose??
