• Hi, I'm Lisa-mommy to my boys, David, 8 and Matty, 6 and wife to Steve. In between school and work we spend our time playing outdoors on the central coast of CA, eating chocolate chip pancakes, tapping tunes on the piano (David) and choreographing elaborate lightsaber duels (Matty). I create handmade jewelry and love taking pictures. Stick around and get to know us!

is it summer yet??

320101320102320103320104320105*

this weekend we went out for waffles and ice cream in avila beach.

the sun was so shiny

and the surfers were so surfy

and it felt just like summer.

well, except for just a little bit of a chill in the air.

but it’s making me long for summer days

and laziness.

* * *

we need to plan our family vacation for this summer.

we usually spend a week in carpinteria playing at the beach and eating out.

but i’d also really like to try camping this summer.

how does your family vacation?

We vacation at home sometimes and away sometimes (usually my sister’s place on the Oregon coast). And then there are the “vacations” taking our daughter to college in Nashville - she has to get there somehow might as well make a party out of it.

  2. Jenilee on March 23rd, 2010 9:53 am

We have started camping. Our girls LOVE it!!! It is a great way to getaway and spend some fun family time. :)

  3. Rebecca on March 23rd, 2010 9:56 am

Coastal Maine… beach, lobster, LL Bean. I can’t wait!

  4. Amy on March 23rd, 2010 10:01 am

I’m hoping to vacation this summer to the mountains in Colorado. Beautiful place! Usually we don’t do much over the summer…too many kids’ ballgames to go to.

michael and i were at avilla beach on sat. a.m.

how do we vacation? time at bass lake (of course). it is a great (free) retreat from everyday life. playing, beach, good food, great people.

i’m so looking forward to it.

This weekend was gorgeous in New England. Monday and Today? Rain and cold. Again. Buh. March in New England is all over the place.

This summer we’re going to Montana to see family and a rodeo. Can’t WAIT!

Wonderful pictures. You are so lucky to be so close to the ocean! If I had the money, I would buy an airstream and spend as much time as possible camping out in that — I’m not that big of a regular camper :)

    XOXO
    Jen

Camping makes me feel a little closer to heaven. I love the smell of pine trees and fresh dew on the trees in the morning. You must be tough to be a “true camper”. We are hoping to buy a tent trailer this year so we don’t have to stay in a tent with kids! I can’t wait for the snow to melt and head up the canyons!

  9. Christi on March 23rd, 2010 10:42 am

I am from the south so we vacation at the Gulf coast. We already have our week picked out! Yeah! Can’t wait!

  10. rachel on March 23rd, 2010 10:54 am

we “camp” in an rv. You don’t have to worry about weather as much and most of your things you can leave in the rv between trips. We just put in clothes and food. For spring break we are coming to your neck of the woods… morro bay. Do you happen to have a shop or boutique in the area where your items are displayed? I have a braclet and necklace but could always use more pieces.

  11. Southern Gal on March 23rd, 2010 11:00 am

The beach!! We have camped - primitive camping all the way. We love the Smokey Mountains, too.

  12. Alexandrine on March 23rd, 2010 11:01 am

Hope we can visit USA this summer !

  13. Melina Wallisch on March 23rd, 2010 11:24 am

we beach it at Ft. Bragg…rent a small cabin right on the water and play for a week, driving through Napa on the way back for drinky poo!

  14. Thomasina on March 23rd, 2010 11:57 am

Great photos! I’m so jealous that you can go to the beach whenever you want (I live no where near a beach). I haven’t gone on vacation with my 3 year old yet, so I have no suggestions for you. Have a great week!

  15. Taylor on March 23rd, 2010 12:07 pm

ahh, wonderful pictures as usual. i could look at your photography all day long.
as for family vacations, we’ll be going to the beach for several weekends throughout the summer when i’m not working :D SO looking forward to it.

Daytona Beach Shores, FL. We are beach people, who live in the middle of the Midwest. We escape to the beach every summer. We own a timeshare week in DBS, so we usually end up there, but we can trade for other destinations. We just like it there and are comfortable there. We love hanging out at the beach and the pool. :)

  17. Victoria on March 23rd, 2010 12:58 pm

just took our kids (almost 3 and 9 months) camping and loved it. It was so great to be unplugged and “forced” to play. highly recomend it!

  18. Sharon on March 23rd, 2010 1:02 pm

we love camping. so far, we love the KOA campgrounds. we also have gone to gulf shores, alabama, and really enjoy it there. this year we are going to visit places {states} we have never visited. we’re going to lousiana to explore, i have a cousin that lives there. we’ll be checking out new orleans while there. we spend time in tennessee and love the mountains. accomodations are free as my dad lives in tennessee. i hope you guys try camping and love it as much as we do.

  20. Erin M. on March 23rd, 2010 1:28 pm

I can’t believe you go to the beach on vacation since you live so close to a beach! :)
This year we’re going to a condo in Hilton Head,SC and on the way back we’re going to camp in the Smoky Mountains. Woohoo! So excited.

LOVE the Hula Hut. Their birthday cake ice cream rocks! We will vacation at Sunriver Oregon this year. Beautiful Central Oregon high desert. Ride bike, horses, swim, BBQ.

Hi Lisa, gorgeous photos.. love the feet on the railing!! We live at the top of the South Island of New Zealand and my absolute favourite thing to do is to head further south to Central Otago (near Queenstown) for the autumn colours. The trees have to be seen to be believed, glorious colours and the countryside is very dear to my heart especially as I grew up at the bottom of the South Island and spent all my school holidays near Queenstown in a gorgeous township called Arrowtown. We are heading down there sometime soon for a week and I can’t wait!!! Goosebumps! Smiles…

  25. Jenny Matlock on March 23rd, 2010 3:01 pm

Ice cream and waffles and family and the ocean and a lovely sky.

    Yum, yum, yum.

So excited — we are going to Morro Bay!!!! I can’t wait! It’s the first time my daughter has been there — I can’t wait to share it all with her –

    Lisa,
I am always amazed ar how beautiful your photos are…did you have training or just self taught? I’m curious because I recently got a Nikon D40, with some additional lenses and I’m completely clueless and scared. I have no idea where to even begin, other than the standard “auto” setting! Don’t have a lot of extra $ to take classes either…any advice??

Anyhoo, just thought I would stop by to say I love droping by your blog, you are great inspiration!!
    Joanne

we are vacationing with no kids in Jamaica in 2 short weeks. i love going to the beach, but with twin girls who are 2 almost 3…a beach vacation is not always the same. this summer i think we might take a road trip to Colorado…another favorite place of mine…even in the summer, i love it!

  29. Taylor on March 23rd, 2010 5:47 pm

    Lisa….
Just this past weekend I tried out a new campground. Its just north of Santa Barbara, so its not too far away from SLO. Its called Ocean Mesa. Its amazing. Super clean and they have a great pool and spa. We are tent campers, but if you have a trailer you can use that.

  30. Heidi @ ggip on March 23rd, 2010 7:14 pm

I like the name of that Hula Hut! We usually visit family for vacations.

  31. Lisa on March 23rd, 2010 8:01 pm

The last 3 years we’ve skipped school for a couple days in September and headed to Disney when crowds & rates were much lower. This year doing a lot of house stuff but debating a night at Gaylord Palms Orlando for ICE in December and/or possibly a trip over the summer to D.C. to see an old high school friend if we can find bargain plane fares…

  32. patti on March 23rd, 2010 9:13 pm

We spend 1 to 2 weeks in your neck of the woods in Cayucos. Love the beach. It’s funny, because we actually live 5 miles from the beach and rarely go to the beach.

  33. Gina on March 23rd, 2010 9:59 pm

Lots of camping in our pop up trailer. My husband and I are both teachers so we have a good chunk of time in the summer to vacation. This year we will be in 8 states over 3 weeks. Although this year my FIL will be joining us on our journey so we will be traveling with him in his motor home. Should be fun!

  34. Jennifer on March 24th, 2010 12:11 am

My husband and I go every October to Door County WI for the week which includes our anniversary. We had honeymooned there. When our son was growing up we went to the Black Hills every summer and stayed in a cabin. It’s a beautiful area.

  35. april kennedy on March 24th, 2010 12:14 am

San Clemente for a week! Surfing! We have spent the last two nights staying up late searching for the perfect vacation rental and trying to decide whether to invite another family! Can’t wait for summer vacation.

  36. claudia d on March 24th, 2010 8:55 am

Oh! I grew up in Carpinteria. I miss it sooo much! I live in New England now and the weather is so not the same! Neither are the beaches.. I envy you being able to vacation in Carp.

  37. Nancy on March 24th, 2010 1:42 pm

We camp near the fresh water beaches of the Great Lakes. We’ve been doing it since before our kids were babes in arms. I would absolutely give it a try. If you have any friends or family that camps, you could ask if you could tag along for a weekend to see how others do things. I would recommend either borrowing or renting the equipment for the first time out rather than investing in everything. If you are concerned about sleeping on the ground, concider renting a tent trailer for a weekend. You don’t have to choose between the beach or camping because you can often camp at the beach. One of these days I would love to go camping and exploring in your neck of the woods. It looks like such a beautiful area.

When we vacation, we usually go “home” to San Luis Obispo! Lucky Duck - you get to be there nearly every day! (That being said, this year we’re going to Washington DC, so I’m feeling like a lucky duck today! We leave on Saturday!)

  39. Melody on March 24th, 2010 7:48 pm

We usually go to Hilton Head Island every year since we’re closer to the east coast. We like to rent condos or homes with family or friends when we vacation so that we can eat in and take turns doing the cooking.

Last year my hubby and I went sans daughter to Santa Barbara though and took a surfing lesson in Carp. We drove through San Luis Obispo on our way to Hearst Castle. Cute town! Got cake from the Madonna Inn after reading about it on your blog. And then randomly found out the husband of a coworker used to be a news anchor in San Luis. Small world.

    Hi there!!

We typically take a 2 week vacation in the summer. We have camped twice - tent camping - it is a lot of work and prep - but SO fun. Its a great time to just BE with your family - the kids love it.

We have also spent time in PA with family and gone a few days trips to NY and MD.

I typically don’t mind what we do or where we go - just as long as its time together and we have fun. San Diego is on our list - and we are dreaming about Hawaii - some day…..

    xoTiffany
