how to decorate bathroom with wearing it in… {before and after DIY}

we’ve lived in our new house for almost a year now–and we love it! the boy’s bathroom already had a denim wallpaper which i didn’t love or hate. eventually i’d like to take off the wallpaper and paint the cabinets, but that’s a big project. for now, this bathroom just needs a face lift!

here’s the before pics. a nice big bathroom and pretty basic. it just needs some LIFE breathed into it!

the first thing i did was spray paint two vintage frames from ruby rose a sweet lime green color and hang them on top of the large existing mirrors. i used command hooks and stuck them straight onto the mirror, then hung the frames with twine. super simple and easy to remove if i want to change things again!

i’m pretty sure the nester would be proud of my window mistreatment. it’s just a table runner that i nailed over the mini-blinds. so much cuter! the oval wall hanging is from my shop with a sweet reminder to keep those pearly whites clean! i put some bottles in the window since it gets such nice light.

i stacked up lots of bright towels from target and they look so cheerful! that whale wall art is a piece from a vintage weathervane. it was copper before i spray painted it aqua.

i can’t believe how fresh and fun it feels–and i only spent about $100!

is there a corner of your home that needs a face lift?

  1. LOVE the mirrors over the mirror!! i’m going to do that! using a painted white and distressed frame! gosh – maybe i’ll just hang the frame over hte mirror!!! no mirror in the frame! wow! will let ya know if i do it! thank YOU for being so generous and sharing ideas.

  2. I love the denim wallpaper!

The “before” was great and I never would have imagined those few changes would make such a difference. Absolutely love.

  3. Yay, you! Thanks for giving me a cheap alternative to taking down all our raw edged mirrors in our bathrooms and replacing them with framed ones…I can just thrift frames and put them on top! Sooo much sweeter, cheaper, and versatile! Now to find a place around here with thrifted frames….and I guess I’ll have to order a “brush your teeth” soon, too! And the towels rolled up in a basket?! Fabulous! Thanks for all your ideas!

  4. ditto – I love the mirror/frame idea. my kids bath only has 1 sink, but lots of vanity room – there always seems to be a bunch of crap on it (with 2 girls, how could there NOT be?) A wicker basket, maybe w/ sections, is a great idea! Next to the big mirror, I have letters that read “smile”.

  5. I love what you did with this space! I just moved into my first house (I’m 21) but I’m renting so I feel like there’s not much I can do but it needs a lot of TLC!

  6. my sister just redid her bath which had cabinets that look like yours…she painted them black and added cool hardware and it looks out of this world…..

  7. What a great makeover! I love the mirrors, and the ‘brush your teeth’ reminder. Our main bathroom is in need of a makeover, with its huge mirror and outdated colors. Maybe I can get it done with just a few simple changes. Thanks for the ideas.

  8. Looks fantastic! I had to laugh when you asked if there’s a corner that needs a facelift – my whole house needs a facelift! LOL!

  9. You are so clever to transform that room so simply.
I wish I had your flair for being able to do that.
    Any tips please?!
    Love it all!

  10. I LOVE what you did with the frames over the mirror! I have gigantic mirrors in both our bathrooms and am not a fan of them….I’m going to have to go frame hunting!

  11. I’ve never seen demin wallpaper and surprisingly I LOVE it haha. SOOOOOO, I saw that your site was mentioned in a “promotion” section in Parents magazine, the May issue:)

    1. so fun that you saw us in parents! love that mag. these comments are making me rethink the denim wallpaper. maybe it’s not so bad?!

  12. What a great make-over! Amazing what a difference can be made with just a few carefully chosen and placed items!

The space I would like to spruce up — my sewing area!

    1. hi shelly! this is a project i’ve been working on for the last couple weeks. i spray painted and hung the frames last week and then added other little things over the next few days. i don’t have a lot of time, but i have so many ideas–so i squeeze things in. xo

  13. love the frames over the mirrors…I’ve been wanting to do something like that to our HUGE builder-boring mirrors in our bathrooms…thanks for the inspiration!

  14. Such a sweet little makeover. I love the idea of the frames. I’m tucking that one away for later. The “Brush your teeth” sign is so cute too!

  15. Never seen or even heard of denim wall paper–I like that!!!Busiest week of the year working ina flower shop and greenhouse and LOVING it!!!

  16. very cute! i love the frames & basket of towels idea – i, too, have a long vanity in the kids’ bathroom that could use some oomph.

  17. Oooo it’s so pretty! The mirrors are also my favorite, love that color 🙂 My bathroom also needs a bit of a face lift.

  18. OH, Love! We have a similar layout to our sink area and you inspired me to put washcloths in a basket in the middle. I am constantly reaching for a new one from our closet but the colors of ours would make an interesting visual in a basket. Thanks!
