a sweet valentine’s breakfast

February 6th | celebrate the every day, family

I planned a fun Valentine’s breakfast for my sweethearts. We had to celebrate a little early because I’ll be in the Dominican Republic on Valentine’s day. I took lots of pics for you–plus our favorite {heart-shaped} pancake recipe is below. Yum!

I kept the table super simple but fun. I used things we already had around the house–but it feels special.

Real dishes, placemats and fresh flowers is fancy for us! We should do this more often, though. It’s so fun and hardly any extra work!

I taped construction paper hearts to twine and hung them from the ceiling.

I keep paper straws on hand and they always add whimsy to the table.

Homemade, high protein pancakes are a staple for us. We probably have them at least three times a week. Here’s the recipe:

For each person, you’ll need…
2 eggs, 1/2C whole oats, 1/4C cottage cheese, dash of cinnamon, 1/2t vanilla
Put all ingredients in blender and blend at high speed until smooth. Add a little milk to thin, if necessary.

For heart-shaped pancakes, Take about 1/3 of the batter, thin with milk and put into a squeeze bottle. I found this one in the cake decorating section at Michaels.

Squeeze and outline of a heart onto hot pan.

Fill in with batter. Add chocolate chips, if necessary. And it’s always necessary.

And you end up with a heart-shaped pancake. I’ve gotten better at these as I’ve practiced a bit. So fun!

A cake topper from our shop is so cute on a stack of pancakes!

And of course, exchanging hand-written valentine’s makes it that much sweeter!

Do you have anything special planned for Valentine’s Day this year?

celebrating matthias at knotts berry farm

January 29th | celebrate the every day

A couple weeks ago we went to Knott’s Berry Farm in Southern California to celebrate Matthias’ birthday. We had cousins and grandma and auntie and uncle. Although he would have rather stayed home and played video games, I think he had a great time. Knott’s is more mellow than Disneyland. I grew up going there and it brought back some sweet memories!

Highlights of the day included malts at Johnny Rockets, bumper cars {we rode twice}, being silly and getting a charicature {a gift from the grandma}. Doesn’t Matthias’ daring look JUST like him?!

Happy Birthday to one of the sweetest eleven year old I know! We love you, Matthias!

bon fortune {so inspiring!}

December 4th | celebrate the every day

It’s fun to celebrate things–big and little! We love to have a themed birthday party or host a big family Thanksgiving. But it’s fun to celebrate the everyday, like special pancakes on Saturday morning or a good report card. Bon Fortune in Carpinteria {near Santa Barbara} was seriously inspiring me to think of new ways to celebrate! She has gorgeous decor and trinkets for every occasion. I couldn’t resist taking some pictures to share with you! Come take a look…

I think I need these reindeer for some cupcake toppers and how cute are these little trees for cake toppers or to make mason jar snow globes?

Visit Gina’s online shop here and follow her on instagram here.

Are you planning a celebration right now? Are you hosting a Christmas gathering?

turning 70 {fun!}

November 11th | celebrate the every day, family

My sisters planned a gathering to celebrate my mom’s 70th birthday. We live four hours north, but we were able to come down and hop in on the fun.

My mom is one of the most generous, creative people I know. Growing up she was always creating–that’s definitely where I get my creativity. And she gives and gives. If you compliment her on a vase she’ll hand it to you and tell you to take it home with you. She has such a generous heart!

It was so fun to see her friends–many who’ve known me since I was born. It was a laid back gathering with delicious mexican food, yummy sodas and a sweet cake. Pretty much perfect!

That’s my mom on the right, in blue and her sister in the black and white checked top.

Happy 70th, mom! You are a blessing to our family and we love you so!

hello halloween, hello monday

Hello cuddles from Auntie Chrissie and a heart-melting smile from David.

 Hello to my {three} superheros. Love.

Hello silliness and celebrating.

Hello being out past bedtime and knocking on random doors. Matthias wasn’t sure about interacting with so many strangers. David was ready to go inside each house and get to know everyone.

Hello moonlight, porch lights, twinkling lights and flashlights.

Hello carved pumpkins–so glad we could enjoy our friends because we didn’t carve any ourselves {slacker mom!}

Hello love. People were so incredibly kind as we knocked on their doors. They took extra time with David and filled their bags with candy. I went to bed with my faith in humanity restored. There is so much good in the world!

Hello November! Wow!

Hello kicking this cold to the curb and praying the boys don’t get it.

Hello colder nights and even a little rain. Hooray–Califonia needs it!

God made light

October 24th | blog friends, celebrate the every day

Have you heard of God Made Light? It’s been all over the internet lately. It’s a new children’s book, and you guys, it is beautifully written and full of truth.

It talks about how God made light and God made YOU. It’s poetic and moving–I started crying, especially when it talks about how when God made YOU, God made light. This is near to my heart because of David’s special needs. He was made to shine and he does. That’s beautiful. Matthias really liked the part about how His light shines in us, even in the dark, even at bedtime when we might be afraid. Lately he’s been a little scared at bedtime and this was a sweet reminder.

As you can see, David didn’t want to put it down. So sweet!

Matthew Paul Turner and his wife Jessica are friends of mine. I’ve been hearing about this book for a while and I am so thrilled to see it out in the world and to read these precious words to my boys {and myself!}. So meaningful.

God Made Light is available here. And there is an adorable floor puzzle and night light here.

sister birthday 2014

September 5th | adventures, celebrate the every day

A couple weekends ago I met up with my twin and our two younger sisters {also twins} to stay in an airstream in Buellton, CA. We had so. much. fun. Coming back to real life was painful–that’s how much fun we had. No responsibilities, no stress, no timeline–just talking, laughing, eating, playing cards and being together. Being real. Being loved. It was amazing. Can we go back this weekend??

Lisa, Susan, Ellen, Chrissie {my twin}

We visited the ostrich farm which was hilarious. They are aggressive and funny. And huge!

The airstream was so fun and cozy!

These are the weekends that feed my soul. So good. So very very good.

Have you gotten away lately?

rip up the to-do list and relax

May 30th | celebrate the every day, family

Last weekend I hit a wall–the kind of wall I simply couldn’t push through. I had to stop and rest. I had to give myself down time. And it felt so good!

We went up to Cambria and walked along the ocean and had brunch. It was peaceful, fun and soul filling.

Have you taken time to let your soul rest lately?
