when david was born we were reeling from the shock of having a baby with so many issues. since my pregnancy had been normal, we hadn’t anticipated any major problems.
suddenly we had a tiny baby, with seven fingers, a g-tube and many unanswered questions about the future. we searched our souls to try to understand. we questioned God. why? nothing seemed to make sense.
some friends of ours told us that because we had sin in our lives, david was born with a disability. they said if we prayed with faith, that God would heal david. they meant well, but their words hurt our already fragile hearts.
then God brought john 9 to our hearts. steve brought his bible to me and shared the verses about a man born blind. the disciples questioned jesus, asking if the man who born blind because of his parents’ sin. Jesus responds ‘no, neither this man, nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.’
soon after, another friend came to us with the same verses from john 9. he said God had laid the verses on his heart. And {again without our knowing!} our pastor was also drawn to these verses and preached a sermon about how God displays his glory in the broken.
recently i met dee who owns an incredible business called red letter words. when she asked me if i would be interested in a custom, stretched canvas, this verse immediately came to mind.
she created a piece of art for us with so much meaning. thank you, dee!
i can say, from my heart, God has used david to change our lives in amazing ways. he’s taught me what makes a person valuable. he’s shown me what true joy is. he’s shown me that beauty and hope can be found even in dark places. and in these things, God is glorified.
visit red letter words here. read dee’s blog here.
david went back to school this week.
and i am simultaneously so happy and so sad!
so relieved he is healing and happy. and i’ll miss having him with me all day.
isn’t that how it is to be a mom? a heart constantly split in two-
with love and worry and guilt and happy. so good though.
i am so thankful. my heart is full.
i love my little sweetheart.

velcro, my buddy, my shadow, my love.
david’s been out of school for 4 weeks now.
two more weeks to go.
and we hang out all the time.
i’ve gotten pretty good at one handed typing.
it’s tough when we are both trying to send emails at the same time–
but we are working it out.
i love you, sweet david!
*
ps–cardio postponed us to tomorrow so we are in LA another day.
everything looked pretty good with pulmonologist today.
they are switching up his inhaler medication. love to all of you!!
*
wow, we did some seeerious relaxing this weekend.
david had a fever sunday morning
and i spent pretty much the whole day snuggled up with him on the couch.
and it was wonderful. {the snuggling part!}
*
*
these pics are from friday.
i spoke at a MOPS group in santa barbara.
it was so fun.
thank you ladies for having me!!
*
*on the way home i stopped at el capitan beach
to catch my breath and snap a few pics.
wow, it was a gorgeous {and quiet} day.
*
*it seems like fall has finally come to the central coast.
and we welcome it with open arms!!
while we plan for thanksgiving,
i am secretly getting super excited for christmas.
white lights and tree and pretty packages.
*
*
but back to fall at the beach.
mmmm, so nice!
just me and the birdies hanging out for a few minutes.
while i breathe the ocean air and avoid getting hit by a wave.
*
*
someone drew a heart on this tree {above}
and while i don’t recommend drawing on trees, i thought it was sweet.
*
*
little webbed footprints in the sand.
love it.

*
happy monday, sweet friends!
we are keeping a close eye on david to make sure his fever doesn’t get worse.
and the holiday busyness has already started over at the shop.
so fun! so crazy!
* * *
i just started my christmas shopping over the weekend (online!)
and i’m seriously ready to pull out the stockings and white lights.
{i’ll try to wait a week or two!}
have you started thinking about the holidays yet?
these little flowers were just outside the hospital
and i took a few minutes last week to snap them.
i love the close-up detail. so pretty.
*
*david is doing fabulous!
we are so excited to see him smiling and playing.
he’ll be out of school for a few weeks until the bones in his chest heal.
but he really seems like himself–silly and playful.
he’s just a little more tired than usual.
amazing!
*
*my mom was admitted to the hospital a couple days ago.
looks like she is on the mend and on her way home soon,
but it’s just been a crazy couple of weeks!!
*
*
i’m ready for some routine around here.
we are getting there little by little.
{check back tomorrow for a fun saturday special!!}
* * *
this weekend will involve some hardcore relaxing.
and a lot of laundry!
what do you have planned this weekend?
*
ucla is located right in the middle of westwood
so there are lots of little shops and restaurants within walking distance of the hospital.
it was kind of surreal to be surrounded by monitors and nurses and medication
and then step outside into sunshine and charming, tree-lined streets.
*
*i got to sneak out for an hour here or there just to get a break.
i stayed all night with david in the hospital and most of the day
so little sunshine was great for my sanity!
*
*
there is lots of interesting architecture and colorful tile.
so many little restaurants i’d love to try out some time.
*
*ok, that was the biggest pigeon i’ve ever seen!
and i love the old school bel-air camera sign. i didn’t have any time to go inside though.
*
*
it felt so good to wander the streets a little
and explore a new neighborhood.
*
*I love those tile steps {above right}. especially the vintage black tile.
*
*i love birds. but you already knew that.
*
*steve and i got chiptole for lunch one day.
it was great to get a little time together in the middle of so much stress.
and while it was hard to leave david, the nurses were amazing.
*
*
i kinda fell in love with the buffalo exchange.
it’s a high end thrift store with lots of vintage finds.
i’ll share a few treasures soon.
and diddy reese–um, homemade ice cream sandwiches.
delicious!! is your mouth watering??
* * *
have you discovered any new little restaurants or shops lately??
*
it was a very happy halloween because david was released from the hospital!
but don’t worry we ate plenty of candy, too.
david dressed up as yoda and matty dressed up as annikin.
the pictures above are from the hospital–david showed off his costume. too funny!
*
*
matthias joined his cousins for a fall festival at a grace church in long beach.
lots of bounce houses, candy, and games.
so much fun!
* * *
we are healing and resting so happy to be home!
how was your halloween?
*
my sister shot some pics of us walking with david through the ped ICU.
it’s been such a positive hospital experience.
the nurses and doctors are amazing-
david is bouncing back so nicely.
yesterday an x-ray showed his left lung had fluid and collapsed,
so they are doing some respiratory treatments to get that fixed
then we’ll be discharged! can’t wait!!
we’ll hang out near the hospital for a few days.
*
*
i feel like a big, dark cloud is behind us.
a big big relief.
* * *
we’ll be laying low this weekend.
and even though david won’t do a lot of trick or treating,
we have a super cute costume to dress up!
matthias is going to be annikan, and david is going to be yoda!
what are you weekend plans?
trick or treating? pumpkin carving? cinnamon lattes?
Hi friends! David is doing so well. Mostly he wants to run around and we’re trying to make him lie in bed. Last night he ate pureed roasted chicken and applesauce (which he loved!!). This morning his chest x-ray came back a little fuzzy on the left lung-so they are looking into that. Overall, we are great, just tired. I’m off to get a big coffee!!
Here are some pics from urban standard coffee shop in Birmingham. It was a highlight of the trip!
