wiww {layering}

February 29th | what i wore wednesday

It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with

Lindsey and the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration!
If you’ve been reading my wiww posts very long, you know I love layering! Layering makes outfits more versatile and encourages buying pieces that can span the seasons. First I’ll tell you about all the pieces of the outifts, and at the end there are a few tips for layering!

Super comfy skinny jeans, Paige via TJ Maxx {recent purchase}. Ruffle top, Vera Wang for Kohls {two years ago}. Black military coat with ruffle, Target {last year}

These boots are my old faithfuls. And it was a rainy day–so I wanted to be comfy. Boots, Anthropologie.

This necklace has been warming my heart. I wore it all through Blissdom so I would feel connected to my three sweet boys {two sons, one husband!}. Connected necklace, my shop.

And last but not least, those adorable fluff pins are from Allora Handmade. And she has some in stock here!

With this next outfit I really layered on color! Dress, Anthropologie {Christmas gift from Steve}

Tights, TJ Maxx. Gray Booties, Kohls {3 years ago}

Cardigan, Target. Granny rose, Allora handmade. Other handmade flower, my friend Mignon.

My dear necklace, Molded heart bracelet, Both from my shop.

Want to hear how I build a layered outfit?

1. I start with the base piece–either a dress or top that I am going to build around.

2. Add in the foundation pieces {tights or jeans, and sometimes a t-shirt or blouse underneath}

3. Spice it up with a jacket or cardigan. Consider adding an unexpected color or twist here.

4. Boots or heels can take the outfit from casual to dressy or ordinary to extraordinary!

5. Finish off with a fun scarf and add in some special jewelry.

Today is leap year day! Basically it’s an extra day–so anything accomplished today is the icing on the cake {right?!} Today I have my mom, sister and nephew in town {so happy!} and I’m working on a little project that I can’t wait to tell you about.

Tell us one thing on your to-do list today!

wiww {stripes and a jean jacket}

February 22nd | what i wore wednesday

It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with

Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration! I guess I was in a stripes and jean jacket mood last week–two different dresses I wore had horizontal stripes and I paired them with a jean jacket. Easy and comfortable!
Jersey dress, Gap. I bought this dress for our trip to Thailand. It’s super easy to wear and will transition from winter to spring to summer.

Gray wedges, Target.

I brought back the scarf from Thailand. Jean jacket, Gap. Layered Bracelets–Thin sterling cuff, Devoted bracelet, my shop.

This dress is shorter than I would usually wear–but the thick gray tights make it perfect for a warmer winter day. Similar dress, Gap.

My dear necklace, my shop. Tights, Target. Jean jacket, Gap. Molded heart bracelet, My shop.

Boots, Fossil.

I’m off to Blissdom today! I’m excited and nervous–so many people I want to see and new people to meet. I’m so sad to leave my boys but looking forward to some girl time. Maybe next Wednesday I’ll share pictures of all the cute outfits people wore from Blissdom–if I don’t get lazy and forget about my camera. What was the last thing you did that made you feel kind of nervous?

wiww {vintage accessories}

February 15th | what i wore wednesday

Hello friends! It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with

Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.
I absolutely adore this dress from Jeanne Oliver. When she sent it to me, I opened the package and ran up the stairs praying, “Please, Lord, let it fit!!”. And it does–yay! It’s one of my favorite pieces. The leather tooled bag is from Salvage Life.

I paired the dress with jeans from Anthropologie. The locket was my grandmother’s and has a photo of my grandfather inside. The wooden bracelets were thrifted for $1 each.

And my new favorite boots from Lotta from Stockholm.

I love to shop for chunky vintage necklaces {with lots of color}, wooden bracelets or cuffs, brooches and bags. On the right day, I can find something fun, unique and totally affordable–love that. Do you ever hunt for vintage or thrifted accessories?

WIWW {break the rules}

February 8th | what i wore wednesday

Hello friends! It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration. When you read this, I’ll be on a plane back to the states. It’s been about 90* in Thailand–so looking at this outfit makes me break out in a sweat! But it should be nice and chilly when we get home {and it’s probably cold where you are!}

I remember reading in a magazine a loooong time ago, that your hose or socks should always be lighter than your shoes. But rules are made to be broken right?! So I felt free to layer dark gray tights with my light camel colored boots.

Dress and tights, both Target. Denim Jacket, Old Navy {gift from a friend}. Scarf, Anthropologie. Boots, Fossil {gift from my husband}. Bracelet, my shop.

Other fashion rules I love to break…1. Don’t mix gold and silver metals. 2. Only wear white after labor day {isn’t white a pretty color for winter?} and 3. Save a pretty dress for a special occasion. I say wear your pretty dress with jeans and a cardigan–and have fun, any time!

Any fashion rules you love to break? Please share!

WIWW {how to wear color}

February 1st | what i wore wednesday

Hello friends! It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.
This week I’m sharing some ideas about how to wear color.

Outfit #1, Jeans, the Limited via TJ Maxx. Sweater, Anthropolgie. Large beaded necklace, souvenir from England last summer. Shoes, Target a couple years ago.
This outfit was easy and fun. I love red and yellow together. Don’t you?
Outfit #2. These pants are seriously so comfortable I could wear them every day. Gray wedges, Target.
And one of my Outfit #3. Orange! I didn’t know I could love orange so much. Flowy top, H&M. Jeans, Anthropolgie. Cream cardi, Urban Outfitters. Turquoise cuff, thrifted.
I love that cuff–and I got so many compliments on it. Orange and turquoise turned out to be a perfect combo. Brand new And these boots? Yep, love them. Lotta from Stockholm.

A couple tips for wearing color…

1. Have fun. Color adds spice to life.
2. Ground your outfit with a more serious color. Dark jeans or a gray sweater can keep the outfit from getting too crazy.
3. Mix two bright colors that compliment each other well. The yellow sweater was even more fun with a chunky red necklace. And I love pairing orange with turquoise.
4. Ultimately wear what you like. Isn’t that what fashion is all about?

What is your favorite vibrant color to wear?

Hello friends! It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with

Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.
This outfit was super cozy on chilly day. Jeans, the Limited via
TJ Maxx. Gray Sweater, Target. Down vest, Gap. Pink Scarf, Zara {purchased in England}.
These boots, oh how I love them! They are so comfortable that I can wear them all day. They run a little small–so size up half a size.  Above, jeans the Limited via
TJ Maxx. Long sleeved black tee and graay sweater, both Banana Republic. Bracelet, My shop.
Red mary janes, Poetic License via Ambiance. Love these shoes–and they’re definitely a conversation starter. They run a bit big, so size down half a size.

I get asked a lot about how to buy jeans that work for a large cuff. Here’s a couple tips…

1. Straight jeans work best {boot cut are too floppy and skinny are too tight}

2. Denim with a little stretch helps to keep the cuff in place well

3. A thicker, stiffer denim will hold the cuff nicely

4. When your in the dressing room, try cuffing the jeans to see if it will work. You can press them into place at home if the cuff needs to be smoothed out a bit!

5. Look for sales! If you find a pair of jeans that are too long–cuff them! A little too short? They might be perfect for cuffing!

Have a great Wednesday, friends!

It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with Lindsey at the Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.

I didn’t realize how much I love gray and yellow until I wore this outfit! Jeans, Banana Republic {like 3 years ago}. White shirt, Anthroplogie. Gray vest, Target. Shoes,
Ambiance {local boutique} by Poetic License.
We were just about to leave for church when I snapped these pics. Matthias wants to wear a button-up shirt and boots every day. That bag around his chest is the swag bag from the creative connection conference a couple years ago. He fills it with crayons, paper, books, etc to keep him busy during church. This week it took him about 15 minutes to get bored. Hmmm.  His outfit is from Children’s Place. My skirt, Target. Gray tee, Kohls.  Jean Jacket, Gap. Boots, Anthropologie. Vintage necklace, This outift was full of color! The dress was a Christmas gift from Steve {thanks babe!}. Dress, Anthropologie. Vintage boots, Ruby Rose. Denim Jacket, gift from a friend, Old Navy. Chunky red necklace, souvenir from England. Bracelet from my shop {love}.

Today’s question–if you were planning an evening out {or staying in} to do whatever you want with friends or for a date–what would you plan?

January 4th | what i wore wednesday

It’s Wednesday, which means I’m linking up with Lindsey for some fashion inspiration!

Above, I wore this outfit to church and then to the beach. It’s not really a beachy outfit but oh well! Dress, Old Navy. Black slip {you can see the ruffle at the bottom} thrifted. Boots, Christmas gift from Steve from
Fossil. I am loving these boots. I really want them in gray. Necklace, Allora Handmade. Bracelet, My shop.
I should tell you, I am all over the map with sizing. In fact, I hardly bother to worry about sizes at all–I just want things to fit the way I want them to fit. The flowy top I’m wearing above is an extra large. I knew I wanted to layer it and have it loose and comfy. And it was on sale at Target for $6. The sweater over it is a small, and again, it was on sale for $6 too. Yay! Jeans, Anthropologie. Wedges, also Target. Necklace, My shop.

Have you shopped any incredible after-Christmas sales?

I’m linking up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.  Since it’s the end of the year {and I didn’t take any pics this week} I thought it would be fun to recap some of my favorite outfits from the last year. I can see how my style has changed a bit–even over the last year. And since I’ve lost a few pounds I am a little more comfortable in my own skin.

sweater, wedges, both target. jeans, anthropologie. tunic, tjmaxx.

dress, sundance. cardigan, gift. boots, anthropologie. necklace, allora handmade.

dress, wedges, both target. jeans, anthropolgie.

dress, sundance. cardi, tights, both target. boots, anthropologie. scarf, world market.

sweater, target. black top, banana republic. jeans, gap. boots, jessica simpson. jewelry, my shop.

this outfit was purchased in england this summer. boots, anthropologie. flower brooch, gilded life.

scarf, jacket, both target. jeans, gap. vintage boots, ruby rose.

ruffle dress, boots, both anthropologe. cardi, target. necklace, allora handmade.

dress, skinny jeans, both target. sandals, old navy. belt, anthropologie.

dress, old navy. jeans, anthropologie. necklace, allora handmade, shoes, ambiance.

vest, shoes, both target. white shirt, jeans, both anthropologie.

Apparently I love to mix high-end {anthropologie} with low-end {target} and add in some handmade and vintage. I love accessorizing and I love layering. I love dresses and boots. And I’ve worn those anthropologie jeans {AG stevie} so much they are about to fall apart. It might be time to invest in a new pair.

This year I want to wear lots of dresses, boots and lots of color! Do you have any fresh fashion ideas for 2012?
