today is my birthday {and a day I happily share with this sweet girl}. i’m in england so we aren’t together–but we’ll be celebrating together next weekend. i can’t wait!

My husband grew up in a historic home – the first superintendent of schools for the nation. His family moved when he was about 10 years old but he took me back to show me the little town and his old house. As luck would have it, the new owners saw us lingering in front of the house. After some quick introductions (and assurance we weren’t casing the joint) he invited us in and my husband gave me a tour of his old home. It was so cool!!!

My Oma (grandmother in German), grew up in a town called Zweibrucken, Germany. The town has a railroad station so it was a target during WWII. Half of the house that she grew up in was blown up during the war. When I was 17, my grandparents took me to Europe & our first stop was Zweibrucken…and I got to see that house! Talk about an emotional experience!
My aunt still lives in my great grandparent’s home in Mexico which we visit every few years. I was able to go once to New York City’s Little Italy and see the home where my grandma was born– I love this kind of stuff!

My father’s father’s family is from an incredibly small town about an hour outside of Indianapolis, so when we were kids we would go back and visit every once in a while. There is not much there anymore, but we would definitely always go visit the family cemetery where most everyone is buried. The family has lived in that area since the 1700′s, and one of my great grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War. He was even at the Battle of Yorktown when the English surrendered, which is pretty amazing. There is a government-issued plaque in front of his grave for that honor. That is something special that I will never forget.
I love family travel posts and yours are so super inspiring. The hubby and I dream of traveling abroad with the kids, maybe someday!
I recently went back to Tulsa to take pictures of Brian’s grandmother’s house and all the places we used to eat and go when she was alive. It was so very special.
My grandfather was part of the troops in WW2 to help free Dacau Concentration Camp near Munich, Germany. I went there when I was in college and took pictures of me standing by the watch towers in the exact spot my grandfather stood over 50 years earlier. I also took them a bunch of pictures my family had and the camp museum said she had never seen pictures of that sort. It was an amazing experience and I’m so proud of my grandfather. There is a plaque in the concentration camp with his troop’s name and it brought warm memories to my heart. Too bad he had already passed one year earlier and didn’t get to talk to me about it.

What a special outing for your family!
I grew up in New England, and our family tree goes back to Myles Standish on the Mayflower, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and a bunch of people who led sweet, quiet lives around Boston and in Maine. My Grammy is from here in Olympia, but she’d come visit often, and we’d drive all over the countryside, visiting little cemeteries and overgrown homes. It’s a very special bond we now share, as I am trying to transfer all her research into my own hands as she ages.

Oh my goodness!! I live just down the road from Wolverton in Milton Keynes – you could have dropped in for lunch!! We know Wolverton well. I have been doing lots of family history research and visiting places such as the cottage where my great grandmother lived and the church where my parents married. It’s so fascinating. It’s been really interesting following where you have visited on your trip here – do you have many more places to see? I hope the sunshine returns for you, today has been just awful. Very English weather

Since I was a little girl, my mom always made me angel food cake with fresh strawberries and whipping cream! That’s still my favorite today! ( I live in Alberta Canada so we only get fresh strawberries in a certain season).

It is a recipe an 80 year old neighbor gave to me when i was only 20 years old (wow that was 30 years ago). It is delicious. It has a fudgey nutty cooked icing that also has coca cola in it. My most favorite dessert is fun fetti cake you know the cheap box cake that’s white with colored dots inside. When I turned 20 my parents brought that cake to college along with child themed party supplies to celebrate leaving the teen years and moving into my 20s. Now that I love to cook and bake I love a homemade chocolate cake!

My absolute favorite birthday cake is red velvet with my mom’s red velvet frosting {I need to call her and get that recipe}. Once in awhile we’ll grab a red velvet cupcake at a local shop but it’s just not the same with the cream cheese frosting.

My favorite birthday cake of all time is called Lazy Dazy Cake!
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. milk
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Beat eggs, add sugar gradually. Beat until fluffy. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder. Add to egg mixture. Beat. Heat milk and butter, add vanilla. Add, beat slightly. Pour into greased 8 x 10 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When done spread with topping and brown under broiler.
TOPPING:
5 tbsp. brown sugar
3 tbsp. cream
3 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. coconut
1/2 c. pecans
Mix ingredients and beat until right consistency to spread.

Ice cream cakes! We used to get them as kids from B&R, but now we make our own since I am a vegan. My favorite uses Turtle Mountain’s Purely Decadent Turtle Trails. All I can say is it’s a good thing birthdays are only once a year cuz I just dig in with wild abandon, calories or not!

My favorite birthday dessert is coconut meringue pie. I don’t know how to make it ( I’m not goood with pie crusts and I’ve never attempted meringue.) And the only place i have found that makes it is an hour away at The Denver Diner. So I only get it a couple of times a year. I keep telling hubby he needs to learn how to make it for my bday!
When I was little, my Grandma always made me Confetti Angelfood with pink frosting. It makes me feel good just to think about those cakes and the way she loved us with her cooking. Happy Birthday Lisa, mine was on Monday (except your lots younger than I!)

Boysenberry Pie! Every year my mom and I share the tradition (our February Birthdays are one week apart)of eating Boysenberry Pie instead of cake on our respective birthdays. I’m not a huge cake fan, but my mum makes this pineapple cake that is soooooooo amazing I could eat the whole thing single handedly. Maybe even in one sitting! The best part is the icing, which isn’t actually icing or frosting – it’s some orange flavoured mixture that’s smooth and creamy and really, the cake is just a vehicle for it. *Sigh* I could really go for some now. ! She would make every person whatever kind of treat they wanted every year on their birthday. My favorite was her banana split cake…super yummy and super easy to make, but very time-consuming. A real labor of love.
Where I live in Texas, there is a french bakery that makes a delicious moist white cake with slices of strawberries, mandarian oranges and kiwi mixed in with the cream that separates the two layers of white cake. More fruit on the top of the cake and almond slivers all around the sides are the perfect touches to a fabulous cake.My family gets this cake for almost any occasion, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

When it comes to birthdays, I’m torn between a regular chocolate cake (with chocolate icing), and ice cream cake…chocolate and vanilla with chocolate syrup and oreo pieces. Of course, my birthday is in the summertime (4 days before yours!), so that may have something to do with it!

My favorite birthday cake is from a great little bakery called Sweet Art in St. Louis. The hummingbird cake is the BEST! Moist yummy yellow cake with bananas, crushed pineapples and toasted pecans. Frosted with cream cheese frosting. YUMMY! Hope you have a wonderful birthday!

Happy Birthday! My favorite birthday dessert is Cherry Chip Cake by Betty Crocker… Unfortunately I can only find it in Canada where I grew up (I now live in the U.S.). Since my birthday is around Valentine’s Day my mom always made the icing pink and decorated it with cinnamon hearts. My sweet grandmother, who still lives in Canada, sends me a box every year!

I grew up in Scotland and still love a good sponge cake with cream and raspberries in the middle and confectioner’s sugar sprinkled on the top! Glad that you are loving England! I always look forward to trips back home, even after all these years of living in the US.

I make cake in individual icecream cones. I ice them in all of my families favorite icing flavours, sprinkles, candies, gummies etc. whatever anyone wants I try to put on them. Brings huge smiles to all our faces!!

All year long, I answer to husbands, children, meeting deadlines and generally a lot of stuff that pulls the focus off me. The other day my son said “mom you never stop”. Really? But my birthday is for ME. I treat myself to all the simple things I love. A trip to the local rose garden, my favorite french pastriy for breakfast (no counting calories today) and maybe a short trip to a favorite store (usually just to window shop). I dont need gifts or a fancy dinner – just a few moment to ‘stop’ and savor MY favorite things.

I wish I had an elegant response to this question, but honestly? Bunny cake. I have an April birthday and during my childhood, my mother worked for half a day in the kitchen to create a beautiful bunny-shaped cake with pink coconut in the ears and sprinkles for a nose. My mother is not the crafty type, so this was a special effort that she made for me every year. As an adult, I’ve missed it. I have finally started making one each year with my daughter and… I still love this cake. It’s 100% sentiment and happy memories and love. Happy birthday to you!
