April 25th | what i wore wednesday

Hi friends! It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with

Lindsey from The Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.
Oh my goodness. This first outfit was comfortable and easy. I felt pretty all day. It’s actually a skirt and top, paired together with a belt. The flip flops are from Old Navy last summer. I think I might need to invest in a new pair.

The skirt is more of thick jersey knit from TJ Maxx. I think this skirt is going to be a summer staple.

The top has more of a flowy, rayon feel and I found it at a local boutique a couple years ago.

This is the brand new bits of my heart bracelet and I love it! It wears so well. Find it here.

Belt, Anthropologie.

Another easy outfit. The weather has been so up and down. Last week it was in the high *80′s and this week it’s cool and overcast. Layering is key! I think the red shoes and red necklace make this outfit fun.

The necklace was brought back from our trip to England last summer. I think I bought it from Tesco?!

Wool coat, vintage from Ruby Rose. Flowy top, local boutique.

Meadow bracelet, from our wholesale line. Find out details here.

Turquoise jeans, TJ Maxx.

That little taste of summer last week gave me spring fever. I want warm sunshine on my shoulders and flip flops on my feet. We’re expecting rain tomorrow but I’d rather talk about summer. Strawberries, beach days, frozen yogurt and lazy mornings are what I crave. What are you most excited for this summer?

mexican meatloaf {yum!}

April 24th | food & goodies, inspiration

One of our favorite meals is mexican meatloaf. I usually double the recipe so we can eat it for two nights and still have leftovers for lunch. I often cook only two-three times a week, and the rest of the time we eat leftovers or we’re out with friends.  My husband found this recipe through cyclo-core {he loves cycling} and I adapted it slightly for our family.

1 pound lean ground turkey {7% fat}

1 medium onion, chopped

2 pieces ezekiel whole grain bread {shredded into small pieces}

1 packet taco seasoning

1 can black beans {don’t drain}

1 whole egg

dash of cumin

salt and pepper to taste

1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to *350. Mix all ingredients {except cheese} in a large bowl until well blended. I usually just use my hands–it’s messy but it works! Place mixture in loaf pan and bake 30 minutes. Then add cheese on top and bake another 30 minutes.

I serve the meatloaf on top of a bed of spinach and then top with salsa, sourcream {or chipotle dressing} and olives. Enjoy!

the guilt game

April 24th | an everyday moment

Sometimes the guilt can be overwhelming. There is so much to do–keep the house clean {or at least decent}, make dinner, wash and fold the laundry, bathes, doctor appointments, homework and on and on. There are moments I feel myself start to buckle under the pressure. It’s pressure I put on myself, of course, to try to be perfect and hold it all together and make sure everyone’s needs are being met all the time.

A few months ago things started to become a bit clearer for me. I had been feeling guilty because I hadn’t taken David to the doctor for a flu shot. I told myself, “If he gets the flu, you are going to feel awful.” I berated myself saying, “If you were a good mom, you would take care of this right away.” In the midst of busyness and the ‘not being able to get it all done’ the guilt was eating me up.

In the midst of struggling with feelings of guilt over not getting David a flu shot, we headed to LA to see his pulmonologist {respiratory specialist} and we planned a quick trip to Disneyland to ride a few of our favorite rides.  At the doctor’s office, she asked me if David had received a flu shot and I sheepishly admitted, “No, he hasn’t.” She asked, “Would you like us to give him one today?” Hallelujah, right? My prayers were answered. “Yes!” I replied, “That would be fantastic!” Now I could move past the guilt and save that energy for more important things. I felt a burden lifted from my shoulders. David would be protected from any nasty viruses and I was a good mother. Phew.

Until we arrived at Disneyland a couple hours later. I could tell David was feeling icky. He usually has a mild reaction to the flu shot–just kind of mellow and achy. The guilt kicked in again, “If only I had planned better, he would be happy and energetic right now.” Usually David loves all the colors, people, and sites at Disneyland. But he clearly wasn’t enjoying himself and it was all my fault.

Then I had a light bulb moment.

Guilt doesn’t play fair.

When I hadn’t taken David for a flu shot I felt guilty. But then after he got the flu shot I felt guilty. Guilt was hitting me from both sides and no matter what I did, I couldn’t win. Guilt wasn’t helping me, it was hurting me.

Since then I’ve been trying to let go of guilt. When that little voice tells me, “You’re not good enough,” I tell it, “You’re right. I’m not perfect. I’m just going to do the best I can.” And when guilt whispers, “You’re a bad mom, you’re a failure,” I remind myself that my boys are happy and thriving and growing every day.

So guilt, I’m not playing your game anymore. I’m admitting right here, right now, that I’m imperfect. And that’s okay.

Where are you feeling guilty? Can you let yourself stop playing the guilt game?

What makes your mom amazing? {part two}

April 19th | inspiration

I interviewed one of my sweet friends, Marijke {mer-I-kah} to ask her about her mom. Marijke has been married for a few years, and she and her husband don’t have kids yet. And Marijke’s mom and dad live all the way in Singapore. Crazy! But they manage to keep up with skype, instagram and visits when possible. Here is what Marijke had to say about her mom…

{photo by christan parreira}

What makes your mom so special?
My mom loves to serve and care for others. She is incredibly honest and has a really big heart for everyone. She has taught me what it looks like to be a loving wife and mother.

If your mom had a whole day to herself, what would she do with it?
She would spend it with her family! My pop, her four kids, and her five sisters!  Probably eating good food together – preferably a picnic in Laguna Beach.

How does your mom show you that she loves you?
She shows her love through acts of service. She cleans for you, makes the most amazing food for you, and does anything else you need or want.

See our first interview {with my neices} here.

Marijke’s mom is wearing our dewdrops necklace in the first photo. Love it on her!

Share with us! If you’re mom had a whole day to herself, what would she do with it?

WIWW {red shoes}

April 18th | what i wore wednesday

It’s Wednesday and I’m linking up with Lindsey from The Pleated Poppy for some fashion inspiration.  If you’ve been reading my ‘What I Wore Wednesday‘ posts very long, you know that I love color. It’s gotten to the point were I can almost call red a neutral–it seems to go with so many things and can make an outfit more fun. This week I took the same red wedges, and the same boyfriend jeans and used them for different outfits.

A few months ago I bought these red wedges at Payless. I also have a black pair–but I think I wear the red ones even more than the black!

Similar striped knit top, Gap. Yellow floral scarf, Forever 21.

This is the new meadow bracelet from our wholesale collection. If you’re a boutique owner, contact us for more details!

The grass was wet from the morning dew. I added inexpensive insoles to these wedges and I can wear them all day–so comfortable!

Boyfriend jeans, Gap.

The next day, I paired the same jeans and wedges with a new outfit for a different look.

Graphic top, Old Navy {on sale $9!} Tan Cardi, Target.

Chunky red necklace, souvenir from our trip to England last summer.

And a little red lipstick pulls it all together. This shade is ‘In the Red’ by Revlon.

Are you looking for a great red shoe? Here’s few fun pairs I found.This simple orange-red heel from Urban Outfitters, love these red oxfords from Lulu’s, and here is the red wedge I’m wearing from Payless.

Lately I can’t get enough sunshine. i want to feel it on my shoulders and open up all the windows and let the spring air in! This summer I plan to wear these comfy boyfriend jeans with flowy tops, wedges or flip flops. And I’ll mix some maxi dresses in there too. What’s one item you want to add to your summer wardrobe?

Bob Jones Trail {spring break}

April 17th | adventures, san luis obispo

Last week when the cousins {and auntie and uncle} were in town we walked the bob jones trail in Avila Beach. It’s pretty much perfect for a stroller and a group of kiddos. It’s easy, and once you walk a mile or two there is a great deli/grocery store where we stopped and had lunch.

The only problem? We brought a little friend home with us. And when I say little friend, I mean a completely unwelcome little tick that somehow found a cozy spot inside my niece’s belly button. We didn’t believe her when she said there was a bug in her belly button, but after closer inspection, there was! Oh my goodness, the crying, the screaming, the laughter. It was seriously one of the craziest things ever. Thank you google for helping get rid of that awful bug!

Have you had an encounter with a tick?

hello monday {santa barbara zoo}

April 16th | adventures, family, hello monday

It’s Monday and it’s our first day back to school after spring break. I’m sharing pictures from our trip to the Santa Barbara zoo a couple days ago, and of course some hellos for this week!

Hello cockatoo. So nice to meet you.

Hello sunny day after three days of rain. I love the fresh feeling when the sun finally comes out!

Hello David who owned the zoo! He loved all the walking.

Hello big kid! Matthias transitioned from little kid to big kid in the last few months. Crazy!

Hello succulents all over the zoo. I really want to plant some on our front porch.

Hello awesome daddy. This guy is so good to our boys {and me too.}

Hello pink! Flamingos are such strange birds.

Hello enjoying lots of family time and wishing it didn’t have to end. School? Do the boys really need an education? Well, I guess they do.

Hello giraffes. I think they are my favorite.

Hello close encounter with a gorilla. This was one of our coolest experiences at the zoo.

Hello trying to shoot only on manual with my camera. It’s good to be stretched!

Hello back to school and feeling sleepy this morning.

Hello field trip for Matthias to see Beauty and the Beast {fun!}

Hello getting back into our routine and loving that feeling.

Hello mexican meatloaf and a quinoa dish for dinners this week.

Hello more pictures to edit and share from our spring break adventures.

Hello french press coffee–I’m off to make a pot.

Hello Monday, it’s going to be a great week! What are you saying hello to this week? Link up your own hello monday post or leave some hellos in the comments section!

friday love {instagram}

April 13th | instagram, photography

It’s Friday and I’m linking up with Jeannett at Life Rearranged to share instagram pics from the week. My instagram name is lisaleonard.

I was just browsing through the fossil catalog and fell in love with this outfit. perfect for summer!

Apparently I can fit 18 pairs of boys jeans in our washer. How can we have so many pairs of jeans to wash?

I heart gussy sews.

Matthias got an eye exam last week–which he thoroughly enjoyed. Usually the dr. appointments are for David, so it was nice to be the center of attention for a change!

My new favorite dessert is sugar free cheesecake pudding made with two parts milk and one part heavy whipping cream. And fresh berries on top. Yum!

I was feeling discouraged the other night and Steve and I decided we needed cinnamon rolls and decaf and a good movie. It definitely helped!

The view out my window as we drove down to Southern California for Easter. The central coast is so beautiful.

And in the backseat, one crashed out little man.

Steve and i got an impromptu date night last week when my sisters took the boys and we went out to see The Hunger Games. Which we loved!

Cousins! We’ve had some seriously good cousin time lately. These three have so much fun together {when they aren’t fighting!}

Easter morning–candy eating and getting ready for church. Love their ties from The Pleated Poppy!

We’ve had four doctor appointments for David in the last couple weeks and everything is looking great! After an appointment at UCLA we wandered around Westwood. No, we didn’t see titanic. We can watch it on DVD at home for a lot cheaper. Do you plan to see it in 3d?

We’re surrounded by palm trees since we’re spending a couple days in Santa Barbara as a family. Spring Break is almost over–it’s been so wonderful! What’s your plan for the weekend?
