a wedding question for you…

did you {or would you} write your own vows or use traditional vows?

59 Responses

  1. We went with the traditional…. we just felt that there is something so powerful in the words that have been spoken by many before us and many after us. We wanted to join them in the sacredness of marriage and pray to keep a hedge around our union like a strong fortress.

  2. sharon says:

we wrote our own based on traditional vows but including what we feel is God’s specific role for us – love the pics:)

  3. Mallory says:

We did both. I loved repeating the same vows that our parents and countless others have recited to each other and we were able to make it personal with our own vows, as our pastor called it…a “love note” to each other.

  4. Kathryn says:

Wow all those handmade touches are so beautiful, what a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of a marriage.

  5. Dianne says:

We used traditional vows. I’m with Kate…there’s something so powerful in those words. And I was SO into the traditional at the time. Now, I’d maybe do something that was more personal. Maybe for a vow-renewal? :)

  6. Southern Gal says:

    Beautiful.

    Traditional.

  7. Clare says:

gosh what an amazing wedding, I went for traditional x

  8. Paige says:

We chose very traditional wedding vows for our wedding day. My hisband is very traditional and it was so sweet and lovely to hear the words from his mouth on our wedding day almost 4 years ago!

  9. Stefany says:

    What great photos!

My husband and I got married 2 years ago and we wrote our own vows. Very little about our day was a surprise for either of us except what we each wrote as our vows – it was the most emotional moment of the day for me.

  10. desiree says:

this is the most adorable wedding. seriously.
to answer your question. we used traditional vows and kept it simple. :)

  11. Patricia says:

I love everything about that wedding ~ seeing it makes me really appreciate the simple, not fussy and if ever I did the whole wedding thing again (which I don’t plan on) but just saying, if I did, I want to do it exactly like that couple! Everything was traditional about mine 28 yrs ago…Things are so different now and you can pretty well do anything you like…I would try to write the vows….But that’s never going to happen, because I’m beautifully stuck in a wonderful marriage.. Thanks for sharing these photos Lisa ~ and I adore your necklaces on the girls.

  12. Alicia says:

We wrote our own vows from several different examples. They said everything we wished to say and they mean more today than they did 15 years ago.

  13. i know, it was such a gorgeous wedding and reception! loved it!! (but cold…)

we wrote our vows. they had promises unique to us, and i love that.

  14. omg, seriously, lisa. i love all your pictures from the weddings you attend. but…*this* one! sooo cute and fun and still sophisticated and charming. love it. love it, love it, love it.

i always love hearing vows at a wedding that aren’t necessarily made up but aren’t traditional, either…like, found in a poem or a letter or something like that. i wish i could think of an example…

thank you for sharing your pictures with us!

    xo

  15. Kelly H-Y says:

Absolutely stunning … and your photography just soaks it all up! Beautiful!
My sisters are LOVING the ‘sisters’ necklaces I gave them for their bdays … thank you!!!

  16. Marnie says:

Traditional…..the view is absolutely breathtaking!!! The old bathtubs, great idea.

  17. Absolutely lovely!!! (big sigh & smiles here!)

  18. alicia says:

Love the wedding ideas above…will have to put in my idea box for one of my four kids’ weddings! I wrote our vows when my husband and I got married because it was my second marriage and I was bringing 3 kids into it. They were very personal and heartfelt…and there was not a dry eye in the church. In fact, tomorrow is our 9 year anniversary…maybe I should dig them up! Thanks for your wonderful blog!

  19. Tiffany Day says:

    Hi Lisa,

Wow, love all those charming rustic details – what a fabulous setting!!

Most definately write my own vows – I for my wedding 12.5 years ago!!

Thanks for sharing this lovely wedding with us!

    Have a great week!

Fabulous…I’m floored by the creativity and details.

  21. Em says:

what a beautiful wedding!! I love these photographs & I love the simple touches that were included in the wedding to make it so personal! –em

  22. elz says:

We used the traditional vows. I am Catholic and one of the things I love most about my religion is the tradition. So, we had a full Mass. Very traditional. But, this wedding looks fantastic. I would love to plan a second wedding outside with white lights and mason jars and champagne chilling in tubs. Cute!

  23. Dawn says:

My husband and I wrote our own vows, yet they were quite traditional. We’ve been married 38 wonderful years. Love the pictures! Thank you for sharing. What special touches in a beautiful setting.

  24. Denise C. says:

My husband & had some traditional vows. During the exchange, I told my husband how I *knew* after our first date in high school, I *knew* I was going to marry him some day. Let me tell you, our first date at 15 & 16 years old did not go too well, we ran into some snafus, none the less, we continued to date.

  25. Such a neat and unusual event. Someone in that family has an incredible eye for detail!

  26. Barb says:

We used the traditional Episcopalian wedding ceremony. It’s simple and beautiful.

  27. angie says:

    Absolutely precious!

  28. Ellen says:

    What a fantastic wedding!

For our vows we memorized the traditional vows, so there was no “repeat after me” particularly appropriate since my husband is a minister in the (very liturgical) tradition.

  29. elizabeyta says:

We used mostly traditional Episcopalian vows.

  30. Mela Kamin says:

SIGH – note to self: if I ever renew my vows – let it be done like this – simple, beautiful, charming and so personal … we used traditional vows, but I wish now that we would have written our own – I’d do much of the wedding differently, but it was after all, just one day and the true test of our love has been the days that have followed and those, even the tough – have shown me the depth of his vows

  31. Erin says:

Wow. I’m totally not a ‘rustic’ type, but I looooove this. Seriously. What a beautiful wedding!

  32. Elle says:

My husband and I were in college when we got engaged and we decided to write our own vows. We both studied and are in youth ministry and so we were deeply engulfed in biblical studies. So we wrote our own- I remember us going to a park with a blanket, our Bibles, chocolate, and a notebook and poured over it for hours trying to find the Scriptures we wanted to use and add our own personal story to it. Our vows were the same- since we wrote it together- but it was very personal. I cherish this deeply- in the end they were vows in one sense and a prayer as well.

  33. Andrea says:

Thanks for sharing. It all looks beautiful! My sister in law is getting married next year and there are some great ideas here!

  34. Jamielyn says:

wow that is such a beautiful wedding! Thanks for sharing the fun pics!

  35. Kelli says:

So gorgeous, whimsical, and traditional all at the same time! Love it!

We wrote our own vows. I said something about making pancakes…I forget the rest! But it made everyone laugh, which was fun!

  36. Michele says:

Stunning! We used traditional vows. We’ve been happily married eight years so I think it was good for us :) Plus, I’m not very creative so I couldn’t stand the pressure of planning a wedding and trying to write meaningful vows. Again, the wedding was amazing. Great photos and thanks for sharing!

  37. Carolyn says:

Lovely photos, so inspiring, we’re getting married Sept 2011 and we’re hoping to write our own vows but we’re still in the planning stages, so that might change. We’re both a little shy so I’m just worried we will be shaky and nervous… but I think it’s so romantic to use your own vows.

  38. Philippa says:

What a glorious setting for a wedding reception and love the unique hand-made and rustic touches. So divine.
We went with traditional vows but we both said a few words to each other 1/2 way through the ceremony. John had notes and I didn’t – yes you guessed it, I got completely tongue tied and couldn’t think of anything to say when it was my turn!! LOL, most embarrassing! Smiles..

  39. patsy says:

we wrote our own for our very smallish family wedding 10 years ago this august 27th. my sister in law asked if she may have them framed for us because she was so touched by our words….at the time i wished that they weren’t just scribbled on a sheet of scrap paper, but now 10 wonderful years later i love to look at our scribbles everyday and remind myself how lucky i am to still be so in love with my wonderful jeffrey….

  40. Tara says:

WOW! What a beautiful wedding! I’m getting married in April and we’re planning to write our own vows. Not really sure why – just what we both wanted to do?

  41. debbie says:

what great details! someone went to alot of trouble to make everything just “so”. must have been a full time job. my fav was the typewriter. so many of the younger folk probably didn’t know how it even worked! thanks for sharing.

  42. Oh my gosh, is this a real wedding?! I can just imagine being a guest and looking around and finding these amazing, meaningful treasures everywhere. I WISH I could re-do my wedding, I’d marry the same guy all over again but next time it would be about US and not about STUFF.

  43. What an amazing beautiful wedding. I LOVE all of the rustic design elements!

  44. Jenny says:

Oh MY!!! So glad you posted these, as Trav and I were so sad to miss this wedding… SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!!! And Cara and Liv look indeed gorgeous. Glad you captured these moments for us non-SLOers. :-)

  45. Jan Hoefler says:

BEAUTIFUL wedding & pictures. Thanks for sharing.
My husband & I celebrated our 25th anniversary on the 16th. While we had a non-traditional wedding (we eloped & were married by a magistrate on the shores of Lake Superior) our vows were pretty traditional.

  46. teresa says:

    OMG!!!!
    A thousand times!
    OMG!!!!!
This is all I can say about this wedding!!!!!!
    OMGOODNESS!
    xoxox

  47. Diana says:

How gorgeous! It makes me ache for the west coast too!

  48. Kirstie says:

Lisa, those photos are fantastic!! If I had my wedding to do all over again, I’d definitely steal some of those ideas! My husband’s cousin just asked me to do charm necklaces for her wedding party – I’m so excited! I hope that mine come out as well as yours! Hubby and I did the traditional vows……couples that are able to come up with their own vows during such a stressful and emotional time amaze me. I’m jealous!

  49. Mary says:

    Peet’s Peets? Holy cow!! Perfection.

  50. Kimm says:

What an amazing wedding! I love the typewriter and the coffee idea.

  51. Robbin says:

It was a tremendously beautiful wedding. I loved the gifts Jen gave her girls…the necklace, the shoes and sweaters. Looks like I missed a couple of things because I was visiting old friends who were also visiting and I missed the coffee thing and having our picture taken. One thing I thought was so precious was when Jen gave her bouquet to Grandma Peet. I had a chance to sit and talk with Grandma and catch up with her. She loved the flowers but wasn’t sure what she was going to do with it. So cute.
And Dan and I wrote our own vows. I handwrote every word that was spoken at our wedding into our wedding book (which seriously needs to be revamped — Creative Memories — some day).

  52. Where did they find all the wonderful antique things? i.e. bathtub, water jug, chairs???? I want them all!!!

  53. Marcy says:

That has to be one of the neatest weddings I’ve seen in a long time!

  54. Kelli says:

We just got married 1 month ago and I used a combination of traditional and vows I found on the internet. A lot of people commented afterward on how much they enjoyed the vows :)

  55. April says:

Where did this wedding take place? I love everything about it.

  56. Sarah says:

Great and creative wedding, so many funny details!

  57. Lydia says:

Crazy…my friends went to this wedding! Unless there is another Jen Peet in the world that got married last weekend.
We used the same vows my parents used. Pretty traditional, with a few beautiful twists.

  58. Renae Dudley says:

the sweet, simple, and creative touches of this wedding are so beautiful. Although I’m not married yet.. I think there is something so romantic about sharing words from the heart… I think I’ll be writing my own.

  59. Holly says:

Beautiful wedding! I’d love to know where that rustic water jug came from. I’d kill for it!
