a friend of mine surprised me with birthday flowers
and i found that darling book above at a thrift store yesterday.
blue + green cover with yellow flowers. what a birthday treat!

and our living room was asking for a coffee table,
but sectionals can be tricky.
but i found the perfect (ugly) maple coffee table at my favorite thrift shop.

which i promptly painted cream
added a super soft rug from target
and a cream throw we already had.
i can’t believe how much it softens up the room.
i might spend a lot of my birthday in this room soaking it up!

As a wedding planner, I eat a lot of cake (woo~hoo for a great job perk!). I will never turn down red velvet, or a great vanilla with fresh strawberries and chocolate. The best wedding cake I ever had was banana with chocolate fudge and peanut butter (YUM!). But I will always have a spot in my heart for the good ol Funfetti from a box.

My all-time-favorite cake is my mom’s chocolate cake with chocolate icing. One time the cake fell apart so we just put all the pieces in a big bowl and poured the icing on top – doesn’t matter how it looks it still tastes delicious!

I love buttercream frosting more than life, okay not really, but I do love it a lot! As for the cake part of the delectable duo, I would have to go with carrot cake! It has always been my fav, even as a child.
Your living room is so sweet. I have been working on a new house that my family just moved into and I seem to be purchasing a lot of things and not putting them up. I think I’m so fixated on making it look homey and not store bought that I second guess my purchases and they just end up in a pile in the hallway!

My mom always makes me a yellow cake with white icing for my birthday and its without a doubt my favorite sweet treat for the whole year….the old fashioned icing, none of that light whipped stuff for me…the old school, Crisco, thick as can be icing. She loves to do it and I love to it….even though I am 47 years old, every year when I bite into that cake I feel like a giddy six year old!!

My FAVORITE flavor of cake was a cake they used to make at Jamail’s in Houston – they are long gone and I haven’t found it since but it was a chocolate cake layered with a hardened cream in the middle and then chocolate ganache on top. In the cream there were sliced and 1/2 strawberries standing up. So it would look like a thin brown layer on the bottom, a super thick cream layer with sliced strawberries upside down and right side up (always looked like hearts to me – probably why I LOVE the cake) ..then a think layer of chocolate cake on top of that and topped off with chocolate ganache. I have never found it again but I still dream of it!!!

Now my boys make me a cake every year – always my favorite but with a twist – one year they coloured it pink with soft yellow frosting (girlie) and the next it was red inside with camo frosting (very boy!) – I have had a rainbow cake and an Italian/Canadian flag cake – it is amazing what you can do with an angel food cake and little boy imagination. My favorite cake flavor comes from a little bakery in the San Francisco Bay Area, called the Prolific Oven. They have an amazing orange-almond cake with cream cheese frosting.

My favourite kind of cake is a buttery-battered, fruit-topped, cinnamon-sugar-sprinkled cake. The best recipe I’ve found is the Plum Torte from Moosewood’s celebration cookbook. I’ve made it with every kind of fruit I’ve been able to lay hands on. I love it soooooo much!

As for my favorite cake flavor: When I was growing up, my Dad always loved an angel food cake with cherry frosting. In fact, one of my earliest memories of celebrating his birthday with him is digging into a yummy Cherry-frosted fluffy angel food cake together when I was seven. So, to this day, a birthday cake that can’t be beat—to me—is an angel food cake slathered in homemade cherry frosting. Yum!

I’ve just discovered my new favorite frosting. It is creamy and oh SO not diet. You take 8 oz of cream cheese and blend it till it is smooth, beat in 1/2 cup of sugar, and then 2 cups of whipping cream! Not too sweet, but delicious~ especially on chocolate cake.

Absolute favorite cake is strawberry shortcake with REAL whipped cream frosting. Lots of fresh sweet strawberries mixed with whipped cream in the center. The cake itself is not sweet and is just oh so soft! We get it all the time from our favorite local bakery!
